Colorization of Downbeat Jazz Club, NY 1948
Looks like everyone is having a great time at the Downbeat Jazz Club except for the guy in the red on the right From the Library of Congress, this black and white photo was taken in 1948 by
inside the famous Downbeat Jazz Club on 52nd Avenue in New York.
Some great musicians performed at the Downbeat Jazz Club including Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. I have always been a big fan of 1940s jazz and blues and especially how passionate the fans were about the music, you don’t really see that earnest love for music these days sadly.
This colorization took a lot longer than I anticipated (They almost always do), but was completely worth the time. I know I went a bit “Dick Tracy” on the bright color of some of the suits, but I would rather it “pop” than look bland.
There was quite a bit of skin tone to cover in this black and white photo and that is easily the most time consuming part of this colorization. If everyone had the same color skin-tone it would look pretty “bleh”, so I don’t cut any corners and color each person individually. I use about 30 layers (at least) per person so you can imagine how much time this colorization took.
Below is the full size original black and white photo as well as my full size colorization. Feel free to share this post on your social mnetwork of choice or leave any comments or questions in the comment section below.
