Colorization of a Man Watering Penguins

Black and white photo of a man watering penguins colorized

This colorization of a man watering penguins at the Copenhagen Zoo in 1955 gave me a hard time. It wasnt the difficulty of the photo it was finding the right color scheme. Truth be told, I am still not one hundred percent satisfied with this one, but sometimes you have to just know when its complete and put it out there.

I am going to try to colorize more animals in the near future. I have done very few colorizations that involved animals and I plan to change that once I find the right black and white photos. I did have a bit of difficulty with the penguins, but it was still fun. I did a bit of research and indeed they were emperor penguins, so the bright oranges and yellows would look good as well as being accurate.

To achieve the markings on the penguins I used a light yellow base layer set to soft light. I then began at the crest of the penguins chest and worked my way down using three layers of orange(also soft light blending mode), each one lighter than the previous one. I then put a touch of auburn at the very top to give it a fullness.

The full size black and white photo as well as my full size colorization are below. Feel free to share this colorization on your social network of choice or leave any comments or questions in the comment section below.
