Colorization of Paul Newman on a Water Taxi in 1963

Paul Newman was an American actor, director, race car driver and humanitarian. Ive read many stories about Paul and they all seem to portray him as generous, kind and just an all around awesome guy. You have most likely seen Newmans Own brand dressings and other items on the food shelves of your local grocery store as well. Newmans Own is a food company from which Paul Newman donated all post-tax profits and royalties to charity, as of 2013 these donations exceeded 380 million.

Before his losing his life to lung cancer in 1988, Paul won an Academy Award for best actor for his performance in the 1986 Martin Scorsese film The Color of Money.

Paul won many other awards in his long career including six Golden Globe Awards (including three honorary ones), a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Cannes Film Festival Award, and a Emmy Award. Paul Newman loved to race and was quite talented and won several national championships as a driver in Sports Car Club of America road racing, and his race teams won several championships in open wheel Indy Car racing.

This particular photo of Paul Newman taken in 1963 Venice and puts him at about age 38 if I did my math correctly(Probably not). The original Black and white photo is below as well as my full size colorization. Feel free to share this post on your social network of choice or leave a comment in the comment section below.

    Hi Wayne,

I think what you have done with the photos on your site is phenomenal! And this is by far the coolest shot I’ve seen of Paul Newman! I would love to shoot through a filter this way, but I guess that is not possible since you use a Wacom tablet & Photoshop CC. How much time on average does it take you to complete a process like this on your photos? Personally I prefer to spend most time behind the camera lens, instead of at the computer. I’ve been an IT professional for the last 20 yrs and I’ve spent far too much of my time sitting at a computer. Thanks in advance for any comments, feedback or suggestions!

Cheers to you up in Maine, it’s so beautiful up there!
    Dominic

Thank you! Yes, it is beautiful here in Maine. Each photo varies on how long it takes to complete.Quality, amount of details and of course amount of research all factor in to how long it takes to complete a photo. The Audrey Hebpurn photo I completed in which she is shopping with her pet deer took about 20 hours to complete. This particular photo took about 7 to 10 hours of total work time to complete.

Oh and I too work in a IT related field as my day job. Thanks for checking out my photo work!

I was searching for this photo after seeing it hanging in the Gritti Palace in Venice. They have a hallway of photos of stars that had stayed there and I was so taken by this photo that I took a photo of the photo. I like your version even better because you see Paul’s famous blue eyes and you did an amazing job coloring it. I would so appreciate a download of you version. Paul is the best male movie star of all time! (And I’m not old!)

    Hi there,

I love this photo, both the original and your colourised version. Is there any way you could send me a link so that I could download hi res versions of both?

Also, is there anywhere I can view your other work?

    Hello,

I’ m from the Netherlands and stumbled on this picture on your website. I was planning on letting a shop make me a textileframe to hang in my living room (without getting broke or going bankrupt… It has to be the black and white picture of Newman on the Riva in Venice. For me there is so much going on in that picture, I really love it!
The only problem I have is the quality the pic has to be at least. I don’t know anything about
photografy and/or printing and the measurements of the frame should be 2.0 meters x 2,5 meters (haven’t quite figured out the inches..). Would this pic be suitable for making such an enlargement without being unsharp/blur (pardon my English, it been a while since high school :-))?
If so, please let me know where to download it. If not, maybe you know a site that will have the quality that’s required?
At this point in my life it would mean the world to me to have this specific picture on the wall and it will carry me through a tough time for sure!
Hope to hear a solution from you. Many thanks in advance.

    Best regards,
    Patrick, The Netherlands
